Tilt steering wheel locked in upright position.?
Hi, I recently bought a 92 Ford Explorer, and the only thing wrong with it is that the tilt steering wheel is locked in the top position. Unable to lower the wheel at all. Any suggestions? Thanx!
First, I would try putting your key into its position as though you are going to start the engine...just don't put it in the start position...just put it in the "on" position. Try moving your steering wheel around and then try adjusting the position. Keep trying the various positions you might have available and keep trying to move the steering wheel position.
Otherwise, you are going to have to get into your steering wheel column, which is rather complicated. You'll first have to take off any hardware that might be holding your steering column in place...where you insert your key, steering wheel hub, turn signal, etc. Then take the casing off your column and you will be able to see the tilt mechanism. It could be broken or have worn out parts.
Just remember to know what you took apart and how to put it back together AND have a lot of patience. Good luck!!!
