The Empire State Building is one of the most famous sights in New York. Instantly recognisable, the massive skyscraper reaches into the air, with its small peak piercing the sky at an awe-breaking height. From many locations in New York, it is easy to spot this towering building – but why do so many tourists make a point of visiting it?
Since 1931, The Empire State Building was the tallest building in New York until the completion of the World Trade Centre’s North Tower in 1972. Named after the nickname for New York – the Empire State – the building remains the third tallest skyscraper in the Americas and has an impressive 102 storeys beneath its narrow antennae.
Named by the American Society of Civil Engineers as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World, the Empire State Building is largely used as a corporate facility, housing businesses and organisations within its four, towering walls.
However, it is also one of New York’s biggest tourist attractions – and with good reason. Not only is it an awe-inspiring sight to view the building from any location, but there’s nothing quite so humbling as standing at its foot and gazing up, attempting to see the top in the far reaches above you.
Once inside, you can take an elevator that takes quite some time to traverse the 102 floors to reach the top. On the way, you may pause to take a trip on the New York Skyride, a motion simulator attraction that is located on the building’s second floor. This 25 minute ride is a fun, exhilarating way to get to grips with the layout of New York city, including a segment where the simulated aerial tour goes ‘haywire’ and the pilot – voiced by Kevin Bacon – must regain control of the flight during a storm.
Once at the top, however, it’s impossible to ignore why so many people visit the Empire State Building. If it’s not the building itself, it’s the stunning views across the city you get from the observation decks, one of which is placed on the building’s 86th floor with the second on the 102nd. With panoramic views across the entire city, you can experience the breadth and depth of the city with far more freedom than from anywhere else and really take in the look of the city that never sleeps.
When you do sleep, however, you’ll be able to relax in one of the New York hotels and dream of the incredible view from the Empire State Building.
