LongMynd

The LongMyndis 10 milessouth of Shrewsbury, and has an area of over 8.5 square miles. The name LongMyndliterally means "LongMountain". The easternedgeof the LongMyndhas manysteepvalleys, though it rises up to a heath landplateau on its westernedge. North to south, it is approximately7 mileslong by 3 mileswide. The highest pointon the LongMyndis Pole Bank at a height of 516 metres. An old trackway,the Port Way,runs along the length of the ridge. Much of the top of the LongMyndis covered in heather, but it alsopossible to findwild bilberries(knownlocallyas whinberries). Alongthe westernedgeof the LongMynd, above the village of Asterton,is a popular centrefor gliding and hang-gliding. Carding Mill Valley, above Church Stretton, cuts into the sideof the LongMyndand offerswalks;to the top of the escarpment and stunning views. It's in the care of the NationalTrust and is free to enter, although visitors haveto pay to park.

Walk the SevernWay

The SevernWay passes directlyoutsidethe Hoteland offersbeautiful low level walking;by the sideof the river withmanyinteresting way points;and detours.By prior arrangement, we wouldbe happyto dropyou off up to a day’s walkaway,allowingyou to walkbackto the Hotel. The distance you chooseto walkin the day is up to you.

Telford TownPark

Right in the heart of Telford, only minutes fromthe busyshoppingcentre, is Telford TownPark.Here you willfindsomethingto interest or amuse everyone. It combinesall the leisure and fun facilitiesyou wouldexpectto findin a traditional town park withall the informality of a country park. No matterwhere you wander in the 170 hectares, you willdiscover somethingnew and different to see throughout the seasons. Telford TownPark is about 10 milesfromthe hotel.

Ellesmere and the ShropshireLakeDistrict

Ellesmere, in the ShropshireLakeDistrict, is the largestand mostspectacular of nine glacial'meres'(deep-water hollows)which were created at the end of the last Ice Age. Fromthe remains of Castlefields, a 12thcentury Norman castle, there are impressiveviews whilst to the south of Castlefields liesthe Plantation,a nature reserverun by the ShropshireWildlife Trust. Colemere is three milessouth-east of Ellesmere and one of the county's mostbeautiful lakes. Surrounded by mature woodlandand two hay meadows, the lake attracts a variety of wildfowl.There is a circularpath aroundthe Merewhich is fairlylevel but can be muddy. The Merecan be reached either by walking;along the ShropshireUnion Canal towpath or by car. Ellesmere is about 30 milesfromthe hotel.

Geoff likes to walk and spends a lot of time in hotels on his way to some of the many hills around our country. His favourite is the Long Mynd and when looking for a Long Mynd Hotel he regularly stops at the Wroxeter.
