The Fascinating History of Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry

When you drive up to the Visitor’s Center at the Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry, located just 30 miles south of Price, Utah, you know you’re going to go home with a pocket full of lasting memories. University of Utah scientists have been digging around and studying this site since 1929. In the mid-1970s, archeologists described two previously-unknown dinosaurs based on bones recovered from the dig.

Today, Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry is the site of a real, working archeological dig, and the quarry tour takes your family on a fascinating journey through time. While scientists have many theories, we don’t know what caused so many fossils to be deposited in one spot more than 147 million years ago. More than 12,000 individual bones, and one fossilized dinosaur egg, have already been recovered. At least 70 different animals are represented among these fossils.

Giant boulders are scattered everywhere throughout the park, and the Rock Walk Nature Trail has signs along the way so you and your family can learn about the spectacular history that’s been unearthed already, as well as all the history still hidden underground.
