My mom receives Social Security money for me after my dad died. If I work, will they stop sending her money?
I am 17 and want to get a job to pay for my own things and help my mother with the rent, but I don't know if I can. After my father passed away, Social Security has been giving my mother money, I am guessing it is child support. She will continue to get it until I am 18, or 23 if I continue with school.
Does anyone know if I can still work, and continue to still receive the money?
You didn't mention how old your mom is and some of the answers depend on her age.
As long as you remain in school, she will still get a check for you. It doesn't matter if you get a job, in addition to going to school, she should still get your "survivor benefits". Be sure to check the Social Security website, as there may be limits as to what you can earn without losing your benefits.
If she is at least 60 years old, she would be able to get a widow's pension of her own from Social Security.
In the long run, you will be better able to help her out, if you get your education.
Before you make your final decision, do the math. Would you be able to make more money working than Social Security is now paying. Keep in mind the expenses involved in having a job, such as transportation, taxes taken out, clothing, lunches and all of that stuff.
