There is much to learn about history in the state of Wyoming, especially that of Western American history. But who would have thought that there would be so much interesting history and information about a dam? The Buffalo Bill Dam is just that, a place of interesting history and there is no better place to learn about that history than the Buffalo Bill Dam Visitor Center, Cody, Wyoming. Formerly known as the Shoshone Dam, the Buffalo Bill Dam was named after Col. William F. Cody, also known as Buffalo Bill, in 1946 and rests high above scenic Shoshone River.

The dams’ visitor’s center offers much information on how the dam came to be such as the hard times gone through by the construction workers, the high costs of the project, and why Buffalo Bill decided to build it. The visitor’s center is open every season from May thru September and the admission is always free. While the visitor’s center may close for a few months, the dam itself can be seen year round as it is also a highway rest stop. Be sure to stop in while traveling the beautiful highway 16 and check out the wonderful gift shop and views that this amazing place has to offer.
