Heroes of the Air

Most pilots must have a large amount of courage and bravery, as well as special skills at their chosen profession. Today’s pilots have a great deal of helpful equipment to assist them to fly safely from place to place, including radar and auto pilot features, electronic controls and advanced communication.

Most pilots, and passengers, cannot fathom the courage required of the earliest pilots and aviators, many of whom may have been unable to communicate with anyone on the ground, and who had to know how to repair their own equipment if they got into trouble.

The Alaska Aviation Heritage Museum in Anchorage works to educate the public about the rare courage and incredible dedication of the state’s many aviators, especially the earliest pilots who worked frequently in the uncharted and uninhabited wilderness that comprises a great majority of the region.

The Museum also documents the state’s unique connection to aviation, displaying historic aircraft, artifacts and memorabilia that illustrate the need for air travel which helped the state to flourish and prosper.

To better explain the critical role that aviation and bush pilots have played in the development of the state the Museum also has a “Hall of Fame” that inducts one new member each year. The pilots selected are notable for their influence, courage and sacrifices in the building of Alaska’s aviation industry.
